Burning Rice

Did anyone think this was possible? Well I am here to announce, it is. I am by far the world's worst rice cooker. I remember when Ryan and I were registering for our wedding, I wanted to include a rice cooker. Here is how the scene played out:

Me: Hey we should register for this

Ryan: What?! What is that?

Me: A rice cooker

Ryan: (Pointing to me) Here is the rice cooker

With that said, we never registered for the rice cooker. Yah sure it probably would have taken up some space in the cupboards. Yah, I may only use it occasionaly. However, it would have been nice to have today when I almost started a fire in our house cooking some rice for lunch. I smelled something burning but at first thought, "no you followed the directions exactly, that can't be the rice" sniff, sniff, sniff mad dash to the stove. AND Confirmed yes, it was my rice.

The sad thing is I can never cook rice, I have tried instant, brown, white every kind and it NEVER turns out.

Moral of the story: Rice cooker, maybe we should have registered for one after all.

I could never cook rice either!! We purchased a rice cooker from Pampered Chef, and it's honestly the best kitchen purchase we made!! You won't be sorry!!

I have an idea for you- Trader Joe's have bags of rice that you can microwave (both brown and white). I think you pop them in for about 3 minutes and you have perfect rice. I burn rice and have to resort to that!

Did you take the rice off the burner after you added it to the pot? I usually get the water good and boiling then dump my rice in really fast - put the lid on and take it completely off the burner. I've never burned it...but it's been soggy before because I didn't let it sit long enough!! Haha!

As a retired professional chef, I think that your rice cooking problem is one of understanding rice, water, and heat.
The best method of cooking rice is steaming. Burning rice would imply that you were using some other method such as frying. Fried rice is actually steamed before it is fried.
Steaming rice without a steamer is easy. 1cup rice (dry measure) to 2 cups water (wet measure), 1 tab butter (or margerine if you like it better). Heat water with rice in it in saucepan until it starts to boil, reduce heat completely (like to the LOW button on your stove), set timer for 20 minutes, return, and you will find wonderfully (steamed by boiling) cooked rice. Forget the "minute rice stuff, buy the best (longest grain) rice you can find.

Kate, Ryan should be more in touch with your feminine side. As his parents, we should have taught him better. Maybe we can do something about that!!!

Kate and Ryan are now the proud owners of a RICE COOKER!!! We thought it would be an appropriate anniversary present. Hope this makes up for our son's rice insensitivity!!! Love, MIL and FIL
